WAP now provides an ideal way of
presenting detailed geographic information including maps. It is
ideal for "finding my nearest" applications and the vast majority of
mobile phones now have a suitable WAP browser which supports WAP 1.2.1
or above or xHTML. A WAP site can be made location aware in a variety of ways including cell location, place name search and using GPS enabled client application.. In cell location, the user's location is obtained from their mobile network. The user can, for example, send a text message request and receive a WAP push reply which contains a link to a WAP page of local information which can include maps. This is proven in live commercial operation. In place name search, the user opens a WAP site and enters a place name in a text box. Where necessary, place names with the same spelling can be disambiguated. We support both national and international place name search. We can also support UK postcode search. Our GPS, location-aware client is WapAtlas client which runs on a variety of GPS enabled phones. Once the desired location has been determined, the geographic data which can be presented includes:-
