 WapAtlas.mobi differs from other map sites in that it is designed to be opened by browsers on mobile phones and PDAs.  Most importantly it serves maps which fit the limited screen size.  When viewing sites designed primarily for PC browsers, mobile browsers can crop or compress maps, making place names difficult to read. By serving maps intended to be displayed pixel for pixel, WapAtlas ensures no loss of map quality.

Serving maps which fit the device's WapAtlas also minimises data transmission, making WapAtlas quicker and cheaper to browse.     

WapAtlas serves maps provided by OpenStreetMap the free wiki world map.   These maps are available under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 licence and, of course,  WapAtlas makes the maps available under the same licence.

Coverage varies by country.  In most developed countries maps are  astonishingly detailed, in developing countries coverage can be better than commercial maps and for both, new details are being added all the time.  WapAtlas uses an OpenStreetMaps API but we do not claim any endorsement by OpenStreetMap.

With WapAtlas its easy to find a place name as its searchable gazetteer is based on OpenStreetMap and other open sources.  Once you have found a place, its easy to pan and zoom the map or find another place in the same country.

WapAtlas adapts automatically to a wide range of mobile browsers and screen sizes.  Although colour browsers work best, WapAtlas also supports monochrome maps for older phones.  WapAtlas only requires a browser which supports xHTML or WAP 1.2.1 or above.

WapAtlas has a .mobi url.  With other types of URL, mobile networks proxy servers can sometimes add unsolicited material to served pages, increasing the size of pages and increasing browsing costs.  The  .mobi url discourages this, although it cannot comletely prevent it on all networks.

WapAtlas is not suitable for any application where safety is critical.  Caversham Telecom Limited specifically does not claim that WapAtlas or the maps it provides access to, are free from errors or omissions.  Indeed, in a collaborative project of this size, there will inevitably be some errors. 

The standard version of WapAtlas includes 3rd party advertising on selected pages but the site locator version of WapAtlas does not have any advertising.  Caversham Telecom Limited accepts no responsibility what so ever for the content, suitability, availability or decency of any advertisements which may appear on WapAtlas.
