TextLocator Questions

Which networks are supported?

  • Vodafone
  • O2
  • Orange
  • T-Mobile
  • Tesco Mobile
Can TextLocator provide more than one site?

Yes, if the nearest site does not meet the user's needs, they can send a request such as "Get next", "Get nxt", "Get another" or "Get more".  TextLocator uses its log to provide the appropriate information to each the individual user.  Thus up to 10 sites can be announce for a single location.

How Accurate is TextLocator?

TextLocator involves determining the network cell the caller is currently in and the size of these cells varies considerably.  In the centre of major cities, it can be accurate to a few hundred yards, while in areas of low population it can be up to 20 kilometres.

  How Fast is TextLocator?

TextLocator generally takes approximately 30 seconds.  However, all short messages are delivered on the store-and-forward principle and delivery may be delayed by congestion on the mobile network and this is outside the control of Caversham Telecom

What are the privacy implications of TextLocator?

By sending a message to a mobile short code service, users are deemed to have agreed to allow their location to be determined by that service.  Caversham Telecom only determines the users location once for each request and does not reveal this information.  Caversham Telecom is registered under the Data Protection Act.

What is the geographic scope of TextLocator

TextLocator relies on the geographic coverage of the standard second generation (G2) GSM services provided by the UK mobile networks - that is the vast majority of the phones in the UK.  This includes, mainland UK, Northern Ireland, The Orknies, Shetlands and parts of the Western Isles.  However, TextLocator is not available when subscribers are roaming on other networks such as those in the Isle of Man, Channel Islands or mainland Europe.

What do the short messages cost the user?

The user pays their normal rate for the mobile originating message which requests the service.  This is the same as they would pay to text another mobile phone user.

There is a choice of charging options for the mobile terminating reply which provides the outlet details.  The user does not need to be charged for this message at all but if its free, you will be charged for it.

Alternatively the user can be reverse billed  for the mobile terminating  reply at a premium rate of 25p or 50p per message.
